The home was a stagecoach stop on the important main route, Augusta to Pocataligo Road, near the intersection of the Orangeburg Road. "One unit of Sherman's Union forces moving from Savannah to Columbia, in the Civil War, spent a night there, but spared the property when the owner displayed a Masonic ring to the commanding officer. An entire corps encamped at Oak Grove Plantation, looting and destroying, several times set fire to the place against orders." (Allendale on the Savannah, Alexania Easterling Lawton)
