- Comments: "When Lands End plantation house was built on the shores of St Helena Island in 1898, overlooking St Helena Sound, it was to serve as an eight-bed military hospital. The current owner marvels at the solid construction of the place, which has never needed structural repair in its 100-year history. Even the roof is original, made from Buckingham County slate said to last 400 years. The walls are four-course thick from top to bottom. Basement wall cantilevered, adding military-style might to the mansion." Old Homes & Churches of Beaufort County, South Carolina, by Mary Kendall Hilton with photographs by Ellis Skolfield
