Slaves Records of Archdale Hall
The Baker family owned Archdale Hall for nearly 300 years. During that time they kept records on their slaves. The following transcribed document was written in different handwritings suggesting that members of the Baker family added to the records over the years. The records consist mainly of birth and death records. The Bakers did note any family relations among the slaves along with how some of them died. Of interest, one of the Bakers made a note that Whooping Cough was prevalent in 1829 and killed several slaves (mainly children). The records also include the issue of blankets and mention of two ships the Bakers had built. The links below will take you to these notes.
In this transcription abbreviations, spellings, and punctuation marks have been preserved. Line breaks also remain intact, as well as column structure. Indentations and spacing are difficult to replicate on the Web and may be distorted or omitted. [?] represents an unknown word. There were no page numbers on the documents so [Next page] has been used to denote pages.
These records can be found at the South Carolina Historical Society, File 1138.01.
