1881 Deed of Willbrook
In 1881, James and Nellie Lesesne could not make the payments on the mortgage. They ended up selling Willbrook back to Elkan Baum for $5. Below is a transcribed copy of the deed.

E. Baum
The State of South Carolina;
Whereas my husband James M. Lesesne, the within named Grantor has failed to pay for the within described premises to E. Baum from whom it was purchased by him & to whom it was Mortgaged to secure the purchase money. And whereas I am unable to redeem the said premises from said Mortgage and it has been mutually agreed to surrender and recovery the said within described plantation to said E. Baum in payment of said purchase money – Now Know all Men that I, Nellie J. Lesesne wife of the within named grantor James M. Lesesne for and in consideration of the premises, and of five dollars to me paid by E. Baum at and before the execution thereof, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, have remised released and quit claimed and by these Presents Do remise, release and quit claim unto the said E. Baum All and singular the within described plantation called Willbrook and all my estate right titles and interest of in and to the same To Have and To Hold all singular the said plantation, & premises together with the appurtenances unto the said E. Baum his heirs and assigns forever –
Witnessed my hand and Seal this Second day of June A. D. Eighteen hundred and Eighty one (1881)
